“Pay for Prevention” as the next policy and reimbursement initiative
Where has Doug been for the for last 5 months? Helping clients - Ascension Health, Bon Secours Health System and others. Creating MedicalPoint based on Microsoft SharePoint 2007. Developing Communities of Performance for physicians. Working on my next book with Kevin Fickenscher. Being with the family over the summer. And much more….
But to the point on this blog entry. While working the new book titled "Perfecting Healthcare" www.perfectinghealthcare.org which has 9 vital Commitments to radically improve healthcare and includes many stories on the "Power of One" and the "Difference of Many." It struck me in the review Kevin's draft of the elements of Value Commitment that in addition to an expansion of "Pay for Performance" the nation needs a very strong dose of "Pay for Prevention."
Pay for Prevention would be dual targeted at the person/consumer level and by reimbursement organizations in rewarding clinician behavior. It's interesting that "Pay for Prevention" has not been used as a reimbursement and performance strategy as a term in the healthcare literature, but you heard it hear first. Stay tuned for more insights and information on Perfecting Healthcare in the days and months to come. Pay for Prevention is here and it's importance will grow as vital strategy to save the Medicare trust fund and support the relentless pursuit of perfect care in healthcare.
